Gabriel Plotkin’s Melvin Capital poured money into leading auto parts retailer AutoZone (AZO) during the first quarter, a 13F filing reveals. The $7 billion fund snapped up 222,204 AZO shares.Encouragingly, AutoZone boasts a firmly bullish Strong Buy Street consensus, with 11 recent buy ratings vs 3 hold ratings. However the average analyst price target of $1,116 only indicates upside potential of 4%, despite a 10% drop year-to-date. This week is a shortened trading week with major markets closed Monday in observance of the Memorial Day holiday. Investor focus will remain on the coronavirus and its impact on the U.S. economy as most states across the country continued their phased reopening plans.

Shares of AutoZone Inc. rose 1.1% in premarket trading Tuesday, after the auto parts retailer reported fiscal third-quarter profit and sales that beat expectations, as the distribution of stimulus checks helped lift sales in the last part of the quarter. Net income for the quarter to May 9 fell to $342.9 million, or $14.39 a share, from $405.9 million, or $15.99 a share, in the year-ago period. The FactSet consensus for earnings per share was $13.75. Sales slipped to $2.779 billion from $2.783 billion, but was above the FactSet consensus of $2.69 billion. Domestic same-store sales fell 1.0%, with sales up in the mid-single digit percentage range during the first four weeks of the quarter, then were down "materially" the second four-week period given the negative impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, then turned "meaningfully positive" in the last four weeks as the stimulus checks started flowing through the economy. The company said it couldn't not provide financial guidance "with any degree of confidence" given uncertainties associated with the pandemic. The stock has rallied 10.7% over the past three months through Friday, while the S&P 500 has lost 5.2%.
